Cold Pack or Ice Pack: Decide first.

Swollen muscle, pain, muscle stiffness --- it's very confusing whether we should use cold pack or warm pack. Let's decide which one is appropriate.

1. Ice Pack or Cold Pack:

When:

♦ Swelling

♦ Inflammation

♦ pain

♦ Bleeding

Why:

Cold pack reduces blood flow, numbs the affected body part. It reduces pain, swelling, bleeding.

How to use:

Dampen a towel with cold water and fold it with a plastic bag. Place the bag in freezer for few minutes. Place it on affected body part.
Or, put ice in a plastic bag. Fill the bag with water partially. Make the bag air free and then seal it. Place the bag on affected body part.

2. Warm Pack:

When:

♦ Muscle stiffness or muscle spasm or when muscle is tight.

Why:

Warm water increase blood flow in the affected area.

How to use:

Dampen a towel with warm water and place it on affected area.
